Historic Itinerary- South India

After an early breakfast, we will embark on an excursion to Tirupati. Upon arrival, proceed for the darshan at Tirupati Temple. Located in Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati is an ancient Hindu temple town with significant historical references in the Puranas. The temple of Lord Venkateswara is situated on the Tirumala hill, with Tirupati at its foothills. Every day, approximately 100,000 visitors come to this revered site, known for its famous temples. You may also explore nearby temples such as the Sri Padmavathi Devi Temple and the Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple. In the afternoon, return to Chennai for an overnight stay.

Today, we will depart for Mahabalipuram, stopping en route in Kanchipuram, known as the "City of a Thousand Temples." This sacred city is one of the seven holy cities for Hindus and served as the capital of the early Cholas as far back as the 2nd century BC. Kanchipuram was a significant center for Tamil learning and an important pilgrimage destination for Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus. In addition to its temples, the city is renowned for its silk weaving, a tradition that has thrived here for over 400 years, giving it a prestigious reputation.

After exploring Kanchipuram, we will continue our drive to Mamallapuram. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and freshen up. Then, we will proceed to explore Mamallapuram, the ancient port city of the Pallavas. The Pallavas left behind many remarkable monuments, including sculptural panels, caves, monolithic rathas, and temples. Krishna Mandapam features an impressive bas-relief known for its lifelike representation. The world’s largest bas-relief, measuring 27m x 9m, is a whale-back shaped rock that showcases figures of gods, demi-gods, humans, beasts, and birds, representing the entire creation. The Shore Temple, one of the oldest temples in the south dating back to the 8th century AD, is a prime example of the early structural temples built in the Dravidian style. The Five Rathas, a collection of five monolithic temples, each crafted in a distinct style, are also a highlight.

Today, we will embark on an excursion to Tiruvannamalai, one of the holiest towns in Tamil Nadu. Its name, meaning "red mountain," is derived from the spectacular extinct volcano that looms behind it. Tiruvannamalai is an ancient heritage site and a significant center for the Saiva religion. For centuries, the Arunachala hill and its surroundings have been revered by the Tamil people. The temple town is notable for its grand architecture, rich traditions, and vibrant festivals.

We will visit the Arunachala Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was constructed between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Chola kings of the Tamil empire. The temple is renowned for its impressive gopurams, with inscriptions indicating that it was built during the reign of the Chola kings in the ninth century A.D.

In the afternoon, we will drive to Pondicherry. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for an overnight stay.

Today, we will enjoy a full-day excursion around Pondicherry, formerly known as Puducherry. Located on the eastern seaboard of India, Pondicherry still retains some remnants of its French influence, despite it gradually fading over time. Key attractions include the Rai Nivas, the Sacre Coeur Church, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry Museum, and the Manakula Vinayagar Koil Temple.

In the evening, return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, we will depart for Thanjavur, formerly known as Tanjore. En route, we will visit the sacred town of Chidambaram, which is dedicated to Lord Nataraja, the Cosmic Dancer (a form of Lord Shiva). This temple is unique as it houses both Shiva and Vishnu under one roof. Built by the Chola dynasty, this ancient temple is dedicated to the art of Bharatanatyam and is one of the few where Shiva is represented by an idol rather than the usual Lingam. Covering an area of 40 acres, the temple features a gopuram on each side and is distinguished by its five sabhas, or courts. In addition to the temple, Chidambaram is home to several exquisite temples and attractions.

Today, we will embark on a temple tour of Thanjavur, starting with the Brihadeeswara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This temple, considered one of the oldest Shiva temples in India, has welcomed everyone from powerful kings seeking divine blessings to common devotees.

Thanjavur is recognized as the birthplace of Carnatic music, traditional musical instruments, dance, and handicrafts, making it an important center for South Indian art and architecture. Many of the Great Living Chola Temples, which are UNESCO World Heritage monuments, are located in and around Thanjavur. The Brihadeeswara Temple, the foremost among them, is situated in the heart of the city. Additionally, Thanjavur is renowned for Tanjore painting, a unique art style from the region, and is also a vital agricultural hub known as the "Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu."

In the afternoon, we will depart for Trichy. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, we will embark on a temple tour of Trichy, starting with a visit to Srirangam, located just 5 kilometers from Trichy on an island surrounded by the Kaveri River. This 600-acre island town is enclosed within seven walls and features the magnificent Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, which boasts no fewer than 22 gopurams, including one of the tallest in India. The 72-meter-high, 13-tiered gopuram dominates the landscape for miles around.

Next, we will visit the Rock Fort, the most famous landmark in Trichy. This impressive 83-meter-high rock is the only outcrop in the otherwise flat landscape of the city and is considered one of the oldest rocks in the world. The dramatic rise of the rock is eye-catching, but the main attraction is the temple located at its summit, rather than the fort itself, of which little remains.

In the afternoon, we will drive to Madurai. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for an overnight stay.

 In the morning, after breakfast, we will embark on a temple tour of the sacred city of Madurai. Situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, Madurai was once the capital of the Pandya kings and is famously constructed in the shape of a lotus, earning it the nickname "Lotus City." The city is home to a beautiful temple built by the Pandyan kings, where Lord Shiva is worshiped. According to legend, divine nectar once showered upon this location, leading to the abundant blooming of jasmine flowers throughout the area.

In the evening, we will witness the Prayer Ceremony at the Meenakshi Temple, one of the most significant temples in India. The Meenakshi Amman Temple is dedicated to Sundareswarar (a form of Lord Shiva) and Meenakshi (a form of Goddess Parvati). After a spiritually enriching day, we will return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Drive to Kanyakumari, and upon arrival, check into your hotel. Later, we will explore some of the city's famous landmarks.

Swami Vivekananda Memorial: This memorial, dedicated to the great Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda, is built on a small rock island about 200 meters from the shore. The impressive structure features various halls and offers a peaceful atmosphere for reflection.

Kumari Amman Temple: Located near the seashore, this temple provides a stunning view for visitors. According to mythology, Goddess Devi prayed to Lord Shiva for marriage. When her request was unfulfilled, she vowed to remain a virgin, hence the name "Kanya" in Tamil. The idol of the goddess in this temple is adorned with a nose ring studded with diamonds, which can be seen even from the sea.

Thiruvalluvar Statue: This statue honors the revered poet Thiruvalluvar, author of the Thirukkural, a classic that imparts timeless wisdom on ethics and conduct. The Thirukkural consists of 1,330 couplets divided into three major sections: Virtue, Wealth, and Love.

After exploring these significant sites, return to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Today, we will depart for Trivandrum. Upon arrival, check into your hotel. In the afternoon, we will explore the temples of Trivandrum, starting with the Padmanabha Swamy Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is renowned for its exquisite carvings and ancient murals that adorn its walls.

We will also visit the Napier Museum, a 19th-century monument housing a rare and unique collection of artifacts. This museum is considered an important destination among the tourist attractions in Thiruvananthapuram and showcases the features of Indo-Saracenic architecture.

After our exploration, we will return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
